Introduction to Jazz/Blues Theory for Pianists

Students ages 13 – adult possessing basic piano skills will learn the blues scale and its corresponding chords, how to use them in a range of keys and contexts, and turn the symbols in sheet music or a “Fake Book” into “pop music.” Harmonic concepts covered include the difference between regular triads and jazz/blues triads, jazz voicing of chords typically used in popular music, and “tri-tone substitution.” Exploring the percussive nature of the piano, students will learn some Latin/swing/rock figures.

This is a great course for kids and adults who already play a bit of piano, want to dabble in pop improvisation, but lack solid knowledge of the theoretical side of jazz/blues. Gain some confidence in your playing and learn how to navigate a Fake Book so you can impress your family and friends at the next get-together!

In class, students will listen to recordings of jazz/blues masters and to examples of principles/techniques played by the instructor. From earliest classes, students will experience jazz’s relaxed “vibe,” soon playing basic progressions (called “changes”) and experiencing the practical, communal, fun sides of music.

A basic understanding of scales, key signatures, and intervals will assist pianists joining this class.

Coming Fall 2013!!

Piano Maintenance

This class is an interactive workshop "poking around under the hood of a variety of pianos." This practical course, designed for piano enthusiasts of all kinds, will cover piano nomenclature, how pianos work, what to consider when buying a new or used piano, how to care for your piano, an in-depth look at the services that piano technicians provide and communicating with your piano technician, as well as some basic piano maintenance skills. Students are expected to come to class prepared to participate from the first class, having already read at least the first chapter of the text, The Piano Book, 4th Ed, by Larry Fine, Brookside Press.

The purpose of the class is to aid the pianist in understanding:
~ the possibilities and constraints of the instrument
~ how a properly maintained piano feels and sounds
~ what they want in a piano and how to ask for it
~ how to buy and care for a piano
~ how to locate and assess the skills of a piano technician
~ ways to increase the comfort level and confidence that pianists have with their instrument

and to enhance the communication between pianists and piano technicians.
