Introduction to Jazz/Blues Theory for Pianists
Students ages 13 – adult possessing basic piano skills will learn the blues scale and its corresponding chords, how to use them in a range of keys and contexts, and turn the symbols in sheet music or a “Fake Book” into “pop music.” Harmonic concepts covered include the difference between regular triads and jazz/blues triads, jazz voicing of chords typically used in popular music, and “tri-tone substitution.” Exploring the percussive nature of the piano, students will learn some Latin/swing/rock figures.
This is a great course for kids and adults who already play a bit of piano, want to dabble in pop improvisation, but lack solid knowledge of the theoretical side of jazz/blues. Gain some confidence in your playing and learn how to navigate a Fake Book so you can impress your family and friends at the next get-together!
In class, students will listen to recordings of jazz/blues masters and to examples of principles/techniques played by the instructor. From earliest classes, students will experience jazz’s relaxed “vibe,” soon playing basic progressions (called “changes”) and experiencing the practical, communal, fun sides of music.
A basic understanding of scales, key signatures, and intervals will assist pianists joining this class.
